"Brands are established through consistency."
Branding has a powerful influence on consumerism. It's what is used to differentiate products or companies. Though most products fall under broad categories such as clothing, shoe, cleaning product, food, etc, its the brand identity that distinguishes the product. Adidas is not just a shoe company, it promotes active life styles. Febreeze doesn't just sell air fresheners, it's an advocate for families. Successful brands know their target demographics and how to appeal to their emotions so that they not only remember what the logo looks like, but also the memories associated when using the product.
As Americans, our identities are made up of our interests. We are defined by the music we listen to, the professions we strive after, the clothes that we wear. That's why brands are important. They send the message to consumers that if you use their product, you will become what you strive to be. A brand exists so to yell at the consumer "YOU NEED ME!" People from the ages 16-28 are especially targeted by the fashion industry because they are within the stages of life where finding their identity is most pivotal.
A question to ponder is "Who creates reality? The media or the consumer?" Influencers, a short documentary discusses how people are influenced by those with creative minds. These trend setters are the ones who come up with the newest ideas. People like Elvis Presley or Andy Warhol, who rebel against societal norms and lay down passion as their foundations. Trends die almost as fast as they are born, but the brands that remain solid are the ones with consistency. Brands stick to messages that are timeless - family, security, growth. It's hard to pinpoint where trends start and which brands follow these trends, and it's interesting to follow the story, both as a consumer as well as creator.
